La Caixa introduces contactless ATMs

Published: 11 April 2011 y., Monday

Instead of inserting their cards in a slot in the ATMs, customers tap their contactless plastic against a reader and enter their PIN.

The machines, which La Caixa claims offer the fastest withdrawal system on the market, have already been rolled out in Barcelona, Sitges and Palma with more deployments set for locations over the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.

The new ATMs, which tap technology from Japan's Fujitsu, feature twin screens; one for transactions and the other for operational and commercial support. They are also adapted to the Braille system and feature voice software for the blind and sign language videos for people with hearing problems.
