A surge in pirate attacks this year in the busy shipping lanes in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian ocean has led China to join several other nations for an anti-piracy mission.
Chinese forces, along with warships from India, Russia, NATO and the U.S. have been authorized by the U.N. Security Council to carry out land and air attacks on pirate bases if necessary.
