The beginning of Ramadam is usually a joyous occasion for Muslims around the world, but for Chinese Uighurs in Xinjiang, this year's fasting month is a sombre one, following the province's worst ethnic violence in decades. According to official figures, 197 people, mostly Han Chinese, were killed and more than 1,600 people were wounded in the violence.
