Valdas Adamkus Became Honorary Citizen of Santiago

During his state visit to the Republic of Chile, President Valdas Adamkus met with the Mayor of Santiago, Mr. Raul Alcaino.

Valdas Adamkus was bestowed the name of Honorary Citizen of Santiago and presented with a symbolic city key for lifetime merits, contribution to environmental protection, international endeavors, and efforts to strengthen friendship and cooperation ties between Lithuania and Chile.

“I would like to use this symbolic key to unlock the hearts of the residents of Santiago and open up new horizons for cooperation between our cities and nations,” Mr. Adamkus said.

He underlined that by making this visit he wanted to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two cities, which would bring the most dynamic segment of our society – the young people – closer together, promote business initiatives, trade and tourism, and give an additional impetus to cultural and academic exchanges.

President Adamkus also met with the President of the Supreme Court of Chile, Mr. Urban Marin, to discuss the role of courts within the constitutional framework in order to strengthen popular confidence in the state and guarantee the protection of civil rights.
