President Adamkus Awarded Honorary Doctoral Degree at the University of Chile
President Valdas Adamkus was awarded an honorary doctoral degree at the University of Chile during his state visit to the Republic of Chile.
At a festive ceremony, President Adamkus’ biography and activities were introduced to the academic audience in Santiago. He was presented with a medal and special diploma.
The Rector of the University of Chile, professor Viktor Perez, said in his speech that Valdas Adamkus‘ life-time merits and personal authority among the international community had earned him the well-deserved honorary doctoral degree.
“We welcome you to our community. Yesterday, together with Chile’s president you signed a bilateral agreement on tourism. I believe that now, as Honorary Doctor of the University of Chile, you will invite scholars and artists to share their ideas and projects with the people of Chile,” Mr. Perez said.
In his response speech, President Adamkus underlined that it was a great privilege for him to become an honorary doctor of the University of Chile where Ignacio Domeyko – the world famous scientist and public figure – had been rector for many years.
“The names of many prominent scientists are inscribed in the University’s history book, of which the name of Ignacio Domeyko is the most precious. He had always maintained close ties with Lithuania and his heart had always been close to Lithuania. I am greatly proud of this son of Lithuania, who was born far-away from Chile but represented its culture and science,” Mr. Adamkus said.
Addressing the University students, President Adamkus noted that the world of today had reached the heights of civilization, transcending over the boundaries of human brain. “In my opinion, today’s young generation must draw on the sources of creativity and vitality that nurtured rebellious souls and prominent freedom fighters,” Mr. Adamkus said. “I firmly believe that you will carry, with dignity and valor, the torch of humanness and progress which was lighted at this university by Ignacio Domeyko. I believe that this torch will give you strength and always support you on the path of courage, conscience and the ideals of freedom.”
President Adamkus took part in the ceremony of unveiling a plaque to commemorate Ignacio Domeyko.
Valdas Adamkus has ended his tour of four Latin American countries. He is returning to Lithuania after visiting Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile on July 14 through 25.
The president and delegation will arrive in Vilnius Friday night.
