Lithuania's and Poland's Reciprocal Guarantee is an example of a European dialogue, says V. Adamkus

 

President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received participants of the conference “Historic Significance of the Reciprocal Guarantee of Lithuania and Poland and the Present Day”.

Lithuania's Head of State congratulated everybody who came to the historical Vilnius where the majestic spirit of the State of Lithuania and Poland is still alive.
President Adamkus underlined that the Constitution of the Two Nations and its inseparable part, Lithuania's and Poland's Reciprocal Guarantee, were extraordinarily advanced acts of our solidarity and Europeanity. These documents, according to the President, are a common pearl of Lithuanian and Polish history which makes us feel proud and confident in our capacities even today.

“The Constitution and the Reciprocal Guarantee were important not only for our common state, but also for the whole Europe,” President Adamkus said, pointing out that for the first time in the European history principles of separation of powers were laid down in the Constitution and attempts were made to create a civic and united society. The President believes these principles are still relevant.

As underlined by the President, there is another, no less important, duty for us, i.e. to wipe off the dust of forgetfulness that sometimes covers the book of history of the Two Nations.
“I appreciate it very much that we are together on this day important to Lithuania and Poland and that we keep the spirit of Constitution and the mutual understanding and solidarity that unites our nations,” President Adamkus said.
