President received letters of credence from New Zealand's Ambassador
President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received letters of credence from New Zealand's Ambassador Ms. Penelope Jane Ridings.
As noted by the President, Lithuania and New Zealand, although geographically far apart, are united by shared values of democracy, freedom of speech and the rule of law.
"The resolve of our two countries to actively contribute to a more peaceful world is also evidenced by our joint involvement in Afghanistan," said the President, and underlined that a democratic, secure and economically stronger Afghanistan can become a source of stability for the entire Central and South Asia region.
Citizens of Lithuania and New Zealand have been enjoying an opportunity to travel visa-free for several years now. The President believes the cultural and academic exchanges between the citizens of the two countries must be further promoted so that people can expand their knowledge of each other.
President Adamkus also underlined the close and friendly ties maintained by the parliaments of the two states.
"The recent parliamentary elections held in both Lithuania and New Zealand will undoubtedly bring in changes. I am convinced that the newly elected members of parliament and the newly formed governments will carry on the tradition of cooperation and will find new niches for bilateral relations," the President said.
