In Canada, “Open IPTV Forum” members discussed topics of IPTV

A conference organized by the “Open IPTV Forum” organization (OIPF) took place in late June in Montreal (Canada). OIPF is an international organization founded in 2007, that develops common standards for Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). Its members are such market giants like Ericsson, Cisco, Motorola, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Gemalto, Philips, Sun Microsystems, etc. At the conference, representatives of the group of companies “Penki kontinentai”, which is a member of the OIPF since 2011, were among those who discussed IPTV issues together with the largest TV service and product developers.

One of the issues discussed at the conference was the implementation of the international ISO standards. After much discussion and deliberation, it was decided to start working on the registration of the aforesaid standards, which would allow companies not to be dependent on a single manufacturer’s products (for example, graphical user interface and network equipment could be produced by different manufacturers, etc.), and to expand the range of services and product functionality more easily.

Yet another important issue discussed by participants of the conference was TV equipment and service testing. Members of the OIPF organization decided to establish a testing center, which would provide an opportunity to test one’s products and services as well as receive valuable advice. It is believed that such a center will help companies improve their products and offer their customers even better services.

At the conference, “Penki kontinentai” invited to discuss the standardization of “IPTV Retail & Banking” banking and retail services platform on the TV screen. It is somewhat of a bank branch in the IPTV environment, where customers can easily administer their accounts and perform various banking transactions on a TV screen by means of a user-friendly graphical interface. However, although the majority of conference participants agreed that this is one of the most promising areas of IPTV, prior to offering similar services to customers, it is necessary to discuss and resolve a number of issues arising.

Next conference of the “Open IPTV Forum” organization is planned to take place in Tokyo in autumn.
