Great Economic Achievements
Mark Horton, IMF representative in Lithuania, leaving the country after his three-year stay here, says Lithuania, which now boasts economic stability, growing GDP and low inflation, has approached its strategic goals – the EU and NATO membership. Mr.Horton has also given good evaluation of the rational and pragmatic economic policy currently implemented by the Lithuanian government, of the country’s political stability and, among other things, praised smooth re-pegging of Lithuania’s national currency from the US dollar to the Euro at the beginning of 2002. Mr. Horton came to Lithuania in 1999 and witnessed important economic and political developments of the country like the privatisation some big state-owned companies (the Lithuanian Savings Bank, the Lithuanian Shipping Company, etc.) or the start of the negotiations with the EU.
