The Impeachment by Sejm

President Rolandas Paksas was dealt another blow Wednesday when the country's highest court ruled he was guilty of undermining the constitution, setting the stage for his impeachment by parliament next week. For Paksas to be removed, 85 lawmakers must vote in favor, a number that has already been surpassed as even longtime supporters have called for his ouster. For Paksas, the only way out with some dignity would be to resign, his critics said, but he has resisted such calls. Barring any last-minute decision to step down, Paksas will be impeached by the 141-member Seima, or parliament, as early as Wednesday, said parliament Speaker Arturas Paulauskas, who would become the acting president.
