Romania's urban bear menace

Published: 20 October 2008 y., Monday • • • Views: 13

Conservationists in Romania have launched a campaign to try and get scores of urban bears out of the towns and into a rural bear sanctuary. The brown bear is a common sight in Romania's Carpathian mountains. Neither drivers nor bears are perturbed by each others' presence, with the bears often expecting food from the passers by. Several people, including foreign tourists, have been mauled to death in recent years by hungry or irritated animals which pay daily visits to towns and villages in the region in search of food.
