The need for a stronger EU response to the migrant inflow crisis on the Italian island of Lampedusa is expected to be among the subjects discussed with the European Commission on Monday afternoon. Over 22,000 migrants fleeing unrest in north African countries have reached the island since January. Some MEPs have already urged EU Member States to set out a joint emergency response, whilst others have asked Commissioner Malmström to activate the solidarity mechanism envisaged in EU law.

The debate will also deal with a new draft European Parliament resolution analysing possible long-term ways to cope with migrants fleeing conflict areas, which will be put to vote on Tuesday 5 April at noon.
