Lithuania increases the VAT rate from 19 % to 21 % from September 1, 2009. The reduced VAT rate of 9 % will be applicable for heating energy, books and non-periodical press.

The VAT increase is part of the Lithuanian government's plans to tackle the country's budget deficit. The rise is expected to generate an extra EUR 87 million annually.
