A company in which the Queen invested £100,000 is to drop its .com suffix due to poor sales. The value of Liz's stake in Getmapping.com - a company which sells aerial photographs of the UK - has slumped from a high of £900,000 to just £70,000 following the dotcom collapse.
However, the company only uses the Internet as a shop front for its photographs and so has dropped the dotcom from its name to avoid stigmatisation and emphasise its offline roots.
It makes good business sense but the move makes it even clearer that the dotcom craziness has come to an end. The company announced the name change at its annual results which saw it make a loss of £2 million on income of £1.4 million.
