Art of Lithuania Goes to Internet

Published: 5 September 2000 y., Tuesday
The rapid development of information technologies forced art to be more flexible and modern. Art with IT influenced by e-commerce also becomes more commercial. The Westerners are already facing such kind of commercialized digital art; some people were already born in the age of Internet exhibitions, online art creations, auctions etc. In Lithuania, art is going to Internet just step by step. All the processes of commercializing art are just starting; that's why some people come to Lithuania to study digital art processes. The Contemporary Art Center has various exhibitions of digital art of foreign and Lithuanian works. Various installations and graphic features attract a lot of people, basically young. Under such influence it is clear that soon or later Lithuania will have digital artists generation, which will use the hi-fi technologies to reach their goals and earn for living. Now mature artists are in quite complicated situation. Lithuania is not very good in attracting tourists from foreign countries, so art works cannot be so easily sold. As art does not get much support from the Government, exhibition centers are experiencing something like crisis, financial situation of the painter, photographers and others are quite dissatisfactory. They want to earn some money just for living and continuing their jobs. On another hand, these people were educated in Soviet spirit and majority simply does not trust technologies; does not understand them. This is also an obstacle to do their works and sell them. But step-by-step some people, artists themselves, persuade elder artists to sell their works via Internet and earn some money. The project called Home of Lithuania Art made with the cooperation of Baltic Art Network is making the database of Lithuanian art putting the thumbnails of works for sale. Now the collector can find the picture or photo of particular author and buy it. This work is to be sent directly to the new owner if he or she cannot come and take it himself/herself. Artists set prices themselves, so one works can be quite expensive while others cheap enough. Still there are no possibilities to buy with credit card, because this system costs quite a lot money and server space, so project would have to increase the prices. They don't want to, so just transmitting to the account of Lithuanian bank can pay bills. So far this project is the only in the Baltic States. As one of the managers of this project Saulë Maþeikaitë said, the plans are to make the one database of art works of Europe. Still it is the matter of time and investments. The project is not only Lithuanian. The ideas and investments were of one American, who is working with art works sale in the US. So far the projects without help or participation of foreigners does not have much perspectives. Recently British and Lithuanian artists made very interesting action. The project was called „Ground Control“. Lithuanian digital art is just beginning and obviously not without the help of Western colleagues, who have not only experience, but also money for making art. Lithuanians are gifted enough, but without finances the gifts are wasted. These were the first steps, but not the last.
