Berzins publishes third Doreen Bell mystery

Published: 17 December 2001 y., Monday

Amateur detective Doreen Bell is back, this time in "A Tear in God's Eye", the latest crime mystery by Canadian author and artist Ilze Berzins. Published this month by Nova Scotia's Albert Street Press, the novel is set in Ottawa, as were two previous Berzins mysteries, 1999's Death in the Glebe and last year's Revenge on the Rideau. "The theme is police corruption, murder, deceit, and madness -- all of the delicious crazy stuff that goes into a Doreen Bell mystery," Berzins told. "This book exposes the rough underbelly of this staid government town and its shadier characters who, like life's raisins, float in the rich pudding of Ottawa's respectable lawyers, socialites and civil servants." Berzins as an author first became widely known in the Latvian community of North America with the publication in 1997 of Happy Girl, her autobiographical account of trying to live in Latvia.
