On 8 September, the jury for the European Capital of Culture will decide which city should be nominated by Sweden to be European Capital of Culture 2014.
On 8 September, the jury for the European Capital of Culture will decide which city should be nominated by Sweden to be European Capital of Culture 2014. The choice is between Umeå in the north and Lund in the south. The formal decision will be taken by the EU Council of Ministers in spring 2010.
The jury will present its decision together with Minister for Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth and the Director-General of the National Council for Cultural Affairs Kennet Johansson at a press conference today at 13.30-14.00. The press conference will be webcast on the National Council for Cultural Affairs’ website.
Umeå may become the northernmost Capital of Culture ever and in its application the city highlights the fact that it is part of Sápmi, the Samiland extending over five countries in Nordkalotten – the Arctic area of the Nordic region. Lund highlights the so-called fifth freedom, the freedom of meetings between people, complementing the EU’s four economic freedoms (the free movement of people, goods, services and capital).
