British and other European films supported by the European MEDIA 2007 project will compete for the Palme D'Or at the 62nd Cannes International Film Festival. The Festival will also serve to launch a new MEDIA programme which will allow European films to expand their circulation from Europe into other continents.
Seventeen films that received over €3 (£2.7) million in MEDIA funding will be screened at Cannes this year, of which ten have been nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or Grand Prix. Among the MEDIA financed nominees, there are two films based in the United Kingdom: Fish Tank by Andrea Arnold and Looking for Eric by Ken Loach.
MEDIA is the EU's support programme for the European audiovisual industry. Since its launch in 2001, the programme has supported the development and distribution of thousands of films as well as training activities, festivals and promotion projects throughout Europe. Last week, a new part of the MEDIA programme, MEDIA Mundus, was adopted by the European Parliament. It is a broad international cooperation programme for the audiovisual industry to strengthen cultural and commercial relations between Europe's film industry and film-makers of third countries.
