Favourite book shortlist unveiled

Published: 18 October 2003 y., Saturday

A shortlist of the nation's top 21 texts will be announced by presenter Clive Anderson for the BBC's Big Read poll. The search for the best loved novel was whittled down to 100 in a public vote earlier this year. Now book fans will now have the chance to pick their number one read from the elite group of 21. The top 100 list contained old favourites such as the works of Charles Dickens, who had five entries, and newcomers including schoolboy wizard Harry Potter series by JK Rowling. But the selection process for the top 21 allows only one book per author to be in the shortlist. Booksellers Waterstone's said there had been a boost in sales following the announcement of the favourite 100. The company itself has sold nearly 750,000 books from the list since it was revealed and nearly 1.5 million copies of novels have been sold across the country. The Big Read will be shown at 9.05pm on BBC2 on Saturday.
