For the twelfth year in a row libraries are invited to join the project Nordic Library Week.  This traditional festival of light and literature aims to unite libraries across the Baltic Sea. This year the activities of the project will be dedicated to the theme of War and Peace in the Nordic Countries; the project will take place on November 9-15.

All types of libraries are welcome to participate: school, public, university, rural, city, county and special libraries.

The online registration is open until September 15th at http://bibliotekusavaite.norden.lt.

“Nordic Library Week brings back the tradition of story telling and reading aloud, which was very common in the Nordic countries. That was how people used to spend long autumn and winter evenings”, - the organizers of the Library Week tell.

The main idea of this project is to promote literature and book reading through organizing culture events and gatherings on a selected theme in libraries. The project aims to strengthen Nordic-Baltic culture cooperation with the focus on library’s role in society.

The theme of this year War and Peace in the Nordic Countries was chosen because of several reasons. This year it is 200 years since Sweden lost Finland to Russia. Occupation of Denmark and Norway during the Second World War is also an important piece of Nordic history. “Only through remembering the war we will be able to appreciate today’s peace”, - organizers comment on selection of the theme.

Last year nearly 200 Lithuanian libraries took part in the Library Week, and the events of the week in Lithuania were attended by more than 26.000 people. All in all over 2600 libraries from the Nordic and Baltic countries took part in the project.

The Nordic Library Week has been taking place in the Baltic countries since 1998. The participation of Lithuanian libraries is coordinated by the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania, in close cooperation with the Nordic embassies and the Federation of associations Norden in Sweden.
