The Irish band won three Grammys from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences -- song of the year, record of the year and best rock performance by duo or group with vocal, all for its hit song "Beautiful Day."
Held this year at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the Grammy Awards honors the best in music. A total of 100 categories -- a new high for The Recording Academy -- are being honored Wednesday, though most of those are handed out before the ceremony televised on CBS. Jon Stewart of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" is hosting the event.
Shortly before U2 took its third Grammy, country star Shelby Lynne won best new artist from the Recording Academy. She's been in the business for more than a dozen years, but broke from Epic Records to create her 2000 release "I Am Shelby Lynne."
Earlier in the night, controversial rapper Eminem won the best rap album Grammy for his 2000 release, "The Marshall Mathers LP." This, after gay and women's rights groups protested against him outside the Los Angeles event put on by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Other awards have gone to Macy Gray for best female pop performance for her song "I Try," Steely Dan for best pop vocal album, and Destiny's Child for best R&B duo or group with vocal.
