The twentieth anniversary of the democratic revolutions behind the Iron Curtain will be marked this week in a two day session of the European Parliament on Wednesday and Thursday (11-12 November).
The twentieth anniversary of the democratic revolutions behind the Iron Curtain will be marked this week in a two day session of the European Parliament on Wednesday and Thursday (11-12 November). Czech dissident playwright turned President, Václav Havel, will join others to mark the occasion. Europe's climate change position ahead of the Copenhagen earth summit and the EU's top jobs will also be debated in Brussels as MEPs consider the results of the last European summit.
On Wednesday afternoon Members are also going to debate funding into neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's with the need for better coordination around Europe of both funding and the fruits of scientific research.
Also being debated will be the forthcoming EU-Russia summit being held on 18 November in Stockholm. It comes just weeks after the Parliament awarded its Sakharov human rights prize to "Memorial", a group which works to defend civil rights in Russia.
The impact of the financial crisis on the most vulnerable groups in society will also be discussed with Members likely to call on EU members to use any crisis aid for the most vulnerable first.
