Energy security, climate change, the car industry's financial woes and the future of the Guantanamo detainees are just some of the issues MEPs will discuss during this week's plenary sitting. As the world's eyes rest on Gaza, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will speak to MEPs on Wednesday. Watch the plenary sitting live from 1700 CET Monday.

MEPs will decide on penalties for employers of illegal immigrants, which would also allow immigrants legal conditions of employment. MEPs are calling for criminal sanctions in the most serious cases and want to make companies responsible for the actions of their subcontractors.

Energy security is on the agenda as the energy committee urges emergency action plans, more grid connections among EU members and new climate targets to be achieved by 2050, including raising the share of renewables to 60% of total consumption.

Following US President Barack Obama's decision to close the Guantanamo detention camp MEPs will discuss whether the Guantanamo prisoners should be accepted in Europe.

MEPs will discuss the goals of the Climate Change Committee for an integrated EU policy on climate change. The committee takes as a basis the EU's objective to keep the global average temperature increase below 2°C and a reduction of 25-40% in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. It wants detailed measures for key economic sectors.

As the economic crisis continues, Europe's car industry is having a tough time and jobs are at risk. On Wednesday afternoon, MEPs will discuss the problems of the automobile industry, which has saw sales fall 8% in 2008 from 2007 levels.
