Cisco buys cloud collaboration startup Assemblage

Published: 1 July 2014 y., Tuesday

Cisco announced today that it has acquired cloud platform startup Assemblage, as the company continues its focus on enterprise collaboration. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Assemblage makes a cloud-based collaboration platform that can be used on a web browser without the need for downloads, plugins, or installations. The platform also delivers collaboration apps for whiteboarding, presentation broadcasting, and screensharing from the cloud. Users can even work together on 40 different file types.

As terms of the acquisition deal, Assemblage’s engineers will join Cisco’s Collaboration Technology Group. Cisco said it hopes the Assemblage employees can help it make new collaboration products that also integrate with third-party cloud applications like Box and Google.

Cisco head of business development Hilton Romanski said in a blog that Assemblage will “help us capture the ongoing market transitions of mobility, cloud and the Internet of Everything (IoE).”

Cisco has previously put money behind Alchemist Accelerator, an in which Assemblage participated.

The acquisition is Cisco’s second in 10 days. It announced its buy of Tail-f Systems for $175 million on June 17. Tail-f’s software creates a software layer that lets network administrators manage a wide range of networking devices via a single interface.
