Accreditation for the Millennium celebratory events on July 6 starts today

July 6 will see a number of events dedicated to the Millennium of the Name of Lithuania. Their Majesties Queen Margaret II of the Kingdom of Denmark, King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, and King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden plan to visit Lithuania on this occasion. The celebrations are also to be attended by President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson of Iceland, President Valdis Zatleras of Latvia, President Lech Kaczyński of Poland, President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine, President Tarja Halonen of Finland, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Legate of Pope Benedict XVI and Dean of the College of Cardinals, Prime Minister Andrus Ansip of Estonia, President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, and Russia's Minister of Culture Alexander Avdeyev.

The celebrations of the Millennium will start with the Flag Hoisting Ceremony on the Daukanto Square and the address by the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, after which the honourable quests will attend Holy Mass at the Vilnius Cathedral.

The Holy Mass on the Cathedral Square will be followed by the ceremony of a symbolic opening of the Palace of Rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the greeting and seeing-off of the participants of the Millennium Song Celebration of Lithuania that goes under the title of "The Song of the Centuries". In the courtyard of the Palace of Rulers, Lithuanian and foreign leaders will be greeted by Lithuanian dance and song group "Lietuva" (Lithuania).

Later, the venue of celebrations will move to the Museum of Applied Arts where the honourable guests will inspect Millennium exhibitions "Lithuania in Ancient Historical Sources", "Wawel in Vilnius. From the Jagiellonian Dynasty to the end of the Republic, and "The Art of Balts", and will attend lunch to be hosted by President Adamkus.

In the afternoon, Lithuanian and foreign heads of states will watch "The Song of the Centuries" concert in the Vingio Park. After the concert, the President of Lithuania will host a gala reception in the courtyard of the Presidential Palace, dedicated to the Millennium of the First Mention of the Name of Lithuanian in Written Records and the Lithuanian State Day (King Mindaugas Coronation Day).
