After finding out about President Yeltsin_s sudden resignation and the appointment of Vladimir Putin with all presidential duties, Russian politicians unsurprisingly reacted to the event.
Much of the public is grateful for the resignation. Several ministers expressed the belief that the change will help the economic situation in Russia tremendously. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov considers the resignation "too late", and Vladimir Zhirinovsky feels that the presidential elections should take place as early as the end of January. Former Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin calls the public to support Vladimir Putin, and Communist Party leader Gennnady Ziuganov believes this to be the work of patriots and communists. Only Evgenni Primakov is unable to comment on Yeltsin_s resignation.
