During his visit to Brussels, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The discussion focused on the global economic and financial crunch. According to the German Chancellor, we are in for a prolonged period of fight to overcome the current downturn, as it is obvious that the EU will need some time to get its economy back on track. “Lean and flexible as it is, Lithuania’s (just like other Baltic States) economy should see a faster recovery compared to large economies of the continent”, said Merkel.

The Chancellor of Germany inquired about Lithuania’s preparation for the decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and the prospects for sustaining power supply in the country in 2010. Prime Minister Kubilius told the German Chancellor that Lithuania is going to more extensively make use of its additional power generation capacities next year and plans to purchase its deficient power needs from abroad, including Russia. Merkel assured Kubilius that Germany is ready to help Lithuania to secure power supply.
