«Central Asian Cooperation»

Published: 8 July 2003 y., Tuesday
A summit of the organization of «Central Asian Cooperation» was taken place in Almaty, the southern capital of Kazakhstan. The leaders of the Central Asian states met for the 6th time in 2 years. The main task of the organization, which unites 4 countries – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, is the creation of a common economic zone in the region, which has a population of more than 50 million. Many hope that the CAC could resolve common issues such as water consumption, lifting of trade barriers, and fighting against the drug trafficking. Now the states have come close to realizing many projects. Last year during the meeting in Dushanbe, the Kazakhstani delegation offered to create three international consortiums – water-energy, transport and food. This time 4 presidents decided to make a request to the international financial institutes – the World Bank, the European Reconstruction and Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank – to carry out an estimation of these projects. The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev will be charged with these issues. He was selected as the chairman of the CAC for coming year. - We have noted that all the sides are interested in the development of cooperation among the regional states. It is very important to begin to act, said Nursultan Nazarbayev, the President of RK. The heads of the states signed a joint statement on the coordination of actions of CAC countries in fighting against terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking.
