Denmark has become the first EU member to approve the accession treaty for 10 countries to join the international bloc in 2004

The Danish parliament approved the measure Wednesday.
The Baltic News Service quotes Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen as saying Lithuania's, Estonia's and Latvia's integration into the European Union and NATO is a major goal of the Danish government.
The other candidate countries are the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and the Greek-ruled half of Cyprus.
The new members are slated to join the European Union on May 1, 2004, in the largest expansion in EU history. EU enlargement depends on ratification of the accession treaty by the 15 existing EU members.
Denmark held the EU's rotating presidency last year when the organization formally approved adding the 10 new members.
