EU Unity and Solidarity Results in the European Council

Published: 23 March 2009 y., Monday

Upon the completion of the second working session of the European Council, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius welcomed its results and the agreements it had reached.

The Prime Minister was also very positive about the pledge to double the emergency funding to EU states that are not members of the euro zone to €50 billion as a sign of European solidarity.

EU leaders also agreed to provide a fast temporary support of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) lending capacity in the form of a loan to a total amount of €75 billion to help bail out countries in economic and financial trouble.

The Prime Minister thinks that especially important in the Presidency conclusions is the Eastern Partnership programme (six neighbours in the East - Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan) and the EU leaders decision to set aside €600 million for the programme’s implementation, its objectives being full visa liberalisation, signing of free trade agreements and deeper economic integration in general.

In the Prime Minister‘s opinion, no less important is the fact that the European Council set out clear guidelines for the works to be done in the future so as to prevent the similar crisis from happening again.
