Farewell ceremony for Defence Attaché of Canada held in the Ministry of National Defence

On 29 July farewell ceremony with the departing Canadian Defence Attaché for Lithuania Jim Petryk was held in the Ministry of National Defence. On this occasion he was awarded the Armed Forces System Medal of Merit.

Col J.Petrykas assumed office as Defence Attaché for Lithuania nearly three years ago and resided in Warsaw. New Canadian Defence Attaché is planned to be accredited in September.

Lithuania and Canada, which is also a member of NATO, mostly participate in the field of military education. Since 1994 according to Military Training Assistance Program financed by the Canadian National Defence Department in the long-term foreign languages and other vocational courses in Canada totally 250 military and civilian personnel of National Defence System were educated. Representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and Armed Forces are also sent every year to different short range courses like defence recourses management, security studies, tactics etc.

Since 1999 Canada through MTAP program supports preparation of Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian military units, assigned to participate in NATO operations, assisted in organising multinational exercise "Maple Arch". Exercise is held in one of three countries with Canadian instructors in command.

In autumn of 2006 exercise "Maple Arch' was held in Rukla, Lithuania with 500 Canadian, 60 Lithuanian, 40 polish and 30 Ukrainian soldiers participating.

In 2009 Canadian Defence Minister Peter G.Mackey paid an official visit to Lithuania and met Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė.
