President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received Mr. Christian Wulff, Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Germany.
Mr. Adamkus and Mr. Wulff discussed Lithuanian-German bilateral relations and economic, scientific and cultural cooperation, the opportunities for closer relations with Lower Saxony, and the international economic and financial situation.
Among other things, national and the European Union's anti-crisis measures were discussed in the meeting. Lithuania's leader underlined that the recovery of Germany, one of the main economic partners of Lithuania, from the crisis would have a direct positive impact on Lithuania. Mr. Wulff shared the President's opinion that the European Union should continue to demonstrate solidarity during the economic crisis.
According to the Lower Saxony's Prime Minister, even small countries are very important for the development of Europe, and their voice means a lot.
President Adamkus pointed out that Lithuanian-German Forum active since 2005 was a very successful instrument of cooperation, capable of providing new impetuses for further cooperation between Lithuania and Germany.
The President of Lithuania and the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony agreed on the need to promote Lithuanian-German economic cooperation, especially in such promising areas as research and innovations, transport projects, and renewable energy sources.
