Global voting organised for Iraqi elections

Published: 15 January 2005 y., Saturday

Voting in the Iraqi elections on January 30 is taking place not only there, but also in 14 other countries, including the US. Polling stations are being set in five American cities, to give about 240,000 expatriates the chance to cast a ballot. Washington, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and Nashville were chosen because of their large Iraqi communities. Roger Bryant, with the International Organisation for Migration, admitted it was not a perfect system. "The programme, as it has been said, is limited," he said. "Not everyone will be happy and many, if they really want to vote, may have to travel for a very long day to reach a facility. But that is, I'm afraid, the nature of a limited operation." Bryant's Geneva-based organisation was asked to help organise the out-of-country voting by the electoral commission in Iraq. Hundred of polling centre trainees are receiving lessons on how to verify a voter's identity and handle any problems.
