Iran was jamming the Persian language broadcasts of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and other international stations on the eve of that country_s elections.

This report comes from the US International Broadcasting Bureau Monitoring Network and BBC Monitoring. It has been confirmed by reports from Iran coming in to RFE/RL's Persian Service. But it is not yet clear how effective Iran's jamming effort is.
RFE/RL President Thomas A. Dine said today that "Iran_s jamming of RFE/RL violates international law and calls attention to the insecurity of Iran_s rulers."
According to the IBB Monitoring Network, the jamming is both deliberate and intensifying. It involves "bubble jamming," in which a Iranian station broadcasts a fast oscillating tone on the same frequency as the RFE/RL and VOA broadcasts and "voice jamming," in which the jammers put the external service of the Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the same frequencies used by RFE/RL and VOA.
