It is for the "New policy" to Speak

Published: 8 July 2000 y., Saturday
Leaders of the Lithuanian parties the Union of Centre, New Union, the Union of Liberals and the Union of Christian democrats – modernists, the supporters of so-called "new policy", at conference, which took place on Monday in Vilnius, tried to explain the essence and necessity of this new political sector, BNS agency has informed.

Heads of these popular political parties have sharply criticized activity of the present ruling majority of conservatives and characterized tasks and prospects of "a new policy".

-Many people do not want to live in Lithuania, a lot of them not want to live at all, - Romualdas Ozolas, the chairman of the Union of Centre, has characterized a situation in Lithuania.

According to him, the main priority of foreign policy, alongside with already existing aspirations to be integrated in the NATO and EU and also to support kind relations with the neighboring countries, there should be a search of the new markets for already available Lithuanian goods and for those, which will be produced. The leader of centrists has sharply condemned the majority of conservatives for "destruction" of electro-power sector and the decision to take off the Ignalina atomic power station from operation , having noted that the power engineering should be strengthened by the way of creating new export lines and reorganizing thermal economy.

Rolandas Paksas, the leader of liberals, has told that he connects "a new policy" with the liberal ideology. "Liberalism, the liberal democracy and a free economy - the unique opportunity for the person to become rich and to feel safe," he has emphasized.

Arturas Paulauskas, the leader of the New Union has connected "a new policy" with socialist-liberalism and with the search of a social consensus.

-The not disputed, not dogmatic, prompt and mobile nature of socialist-liberalism does not leave space for stagnation, idle talk and animosity, which were present in two-polar political system of Lithuania, - A.Paulauskas has noted.

At the same time, four Lithuanian parties have accepted the joint statement in which they expressed support of integration of Lithuania into the NATO. There they speak for priority of the policy of integration in the NATO, for the support of preparation for membership and obligations on cooperation, and also for "a sequence, rationality and reliability" of the processes of transatlantic integration in Lithuania. The application was signed by R.Ozolas, R.Paksas, A.Paulauskas and Vitautas Bogushis, the leader of the Union of Christian democrats-modernists.

The forum of "the new policy" is under patronage of the president Valdas Adamkus. The president is considered to be the godfather of this block, because it was him who has introduced the concept of "the new policy”, and for he first time it was mentioned in his annual report. As sociological interrogations show, these parties can expect a victory in parliamentary elections, forthcoming on October, 8.
