Moscow expects Vilnius to be interested in the implementation of the project of high-speed railway visa-free traffic to the Kaliningrad region (Russia's exclave on the Baltic Sea) via Lithuanian territory.
Kaliningrad transit was on the agenda of the Friday meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Chizhov and Secretary of State of the Foreign Ministry of Lithuania Evaldas Ignatavicius, the Foreign Ministry's press and information department reported on Saturday.
The sides pointed out the stable functioning of the last year's coordinated scheme of passenger transit to and from the Kaliningrad region via Lithuania.
However, Vladimir Chizhov spoke about the worsened conditions of cargo transit via Lithuania between the Kaliningrad region and Russia after May 1. "Moscow hopes for effective cooperation with Lithuania and the European Union to solve this problem," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The sides also discussed drafting of an agreement to coordinate activities of Klaipeda and Kaliningrad's ports and Russian-Lithuanian cooperation in the context of formation of four joint spaces of economy, freedom and justice, internal and external security and culture and science between Russia and the EU, the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
The relevant agreement was achieved by Russian and EU leaders during the celebrations of St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary.
