Lithuania is ready to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina to prepare for the EU and NATO membership

On 28 July, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj, who was paying an official visit to Lithuania. The ministers discussed the progress made by Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding its membership in the European Union and NATO, and bilateral economic cooperation.

During the meeting, the situation in the Western Balkans, relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the neighbouring countries, and strengthening of regional cooperation were also discussed.

“I encourage Bosnia and Herzegovina to continue implementing all the reforms necessary for the EU and NATO membership. Lithuania is prepared to assist your country,” V.Ušackas said during the meeting.

The Minister suggested that Lithuania shares  EU integration experience with Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially that of preparing the EU financed twinning  and technical assistance projects, promoting the civil society dialogue.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs discussed interests of Lithuanian investors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and agreed to sign a double taxation avoidance agreement in the nearest future. During the meeting, Minister V.Ušackas handed in to his counterpart a draft agreement on economic cooperation between Lithuania and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“We are prepared to strengthen economic and political cooperation with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lithuania is the sixth largest foreign investor in this country and this provides firm grounds for strengthening of mutual relations,” head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said.

Minister V.Ušackas presented the nomination of Ina Marčiulionytė to the post of Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Lithuania’s goal to chair the annual Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Today Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė took part in the meeting of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the representatives from Ūkio banko investicinė grupė management company and Birač Alumina Factory in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the meeting, future plans of Lithuanian businessmen in Bosnia and Herzegovina were presented and possibilities of establishing more favourable conditions for business in this Balkan country were discussed.

Management company Ūkio banko investicinė grupė manages Birač Alumina Factory, one of the largest factories in the Balkans, also the management company Balkan Investment Management AD and Balkan Investment Bank AD.
