Lithuania supports the dialogue between Belarus and the European Union

In the evening of 27 July in Brussels at the end of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting and before the EU-Belarus consultations, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Martynov.

During the meeting, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Lithuania supported the dialogue between Belarus and the European Union, participation of Belarus in the Eastern Partnership initiative and invited Belarus to actively make use of the possibilities that are provided by this initiative.

According to V.Ušackas, concrete steps made by Belarus towards the state, which can freely create its civil society and abide by the rule of law, would send important signals to the EU member states before the discussion of further EU-Belarus relations this autumn and the planned evaluation of the political situation in Belarus.

Lithuania consistently speaks up for the EU-Belarus dialogue regarding the free movement of goods, capital and people.

Foreign Ministers of both countries discussed bilateral issues of trade and economy, energy and transport cooperation, as well as the Belarusian – Lithuanian Economic Forum, which is due in Vilnius on 16-17 September, and which could contribute positively to the development of mutual economic relations.

S. Martynov invited Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to pay a visit to Belarus in August and at the same time to view objects of heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in Lida, Navahrudak, Nesvizh and Mir.
