On 8 September, Lithuanian Ambassador to international organisations in Vienna Renatas Norkus presented credentials to Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei.

The representative of Lithuania thanked the Director General for the agency’s support to Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, which has reached about $10 million during the years of Lithuania’s membership in the agency. The assistance was provided for the disposal of nuclear waste, nuclear safety, physical and radiation protection.

Cooperation with the IAEA is especially important to Lithuania today, as the construction of a new nuclear power plant is envisaged in the country. According to R.Norkus, the role of the IAEA in the international society is very important nowadays, having in mind the current rebirth of nuclear power and today’s political matters.

R.Norkus stated that Lithuania supported the efforts of the IAEA to curb the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the world and to promote peaceful utilisation of nuclear power.

In the opinion of the Director General of the IAEA, by cooperating with the other Baltic States and Poland in the area of energy, Lithuania has stepped onto the right path.

M.ElBaradei indicated that the IAEA would further seek to maintain close cooperation with Lithuania.
