On 8 September, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas discussed the perspectives of usage of biofuel in Lithuania met with Remigijus Lapinskas, the President of the Association of Lithuanian Biofuel Producers and Suppliers LITBIOMA, Jonas Šimėnas, the Director of the Association, and President of the Lithuanian District Heating Association Vytautas Stasiūnas.

Participants of the meeting exchanged opinions on possibilities to increase the use of biofuel and municipal waste for heat and electricity production in Lithuania, they also named the problems of the development of these energy resources.

Representatives from LITBIOMA indicated that there were a lot of local renewable resources of energy in Lithuania that are not exploited. Wishing to use those resources, it is necessary to develop the equipment, which uses these energy resources, and to advance scientific research and technologies, as well as to establish a chain of safe and reliable provision of these energy supplies.

Minister P.Vaitiekūnas stressed that Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which had a network of diplomatic missions abroad, was ready to intermediate in searching for information about the ways that other countries used alternative organic and inorganic fuel and saved energy. Diplomatic missions can be of use in establishing contacts in the countries that are advanced on these issues.

According to P.Vaitiekūnas, a more active usage of biofuel, municipal waste and other renewable energy resources was very important for the country’s energy market.

“This is directly related to the strengthening of Lithuania’s energy security,” said P.Vaitiekūnas.

During the meeting, interlocutors also decided to promote the implementation of concrete projects of application of biofuel and municipal waste for heat and electricity production. Some of the projects in question are stuck and not moving forward at the moment.
