President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė received President of the European Parliament who came to Vilnius on a working visit.

In the meeting, the two Presidents talked about Lithuania's preparedness to participate in the Copenhagen Conference this coming December and the European Summit scheduled in the end of October to discuss the EU Baltic Sea Strategy and energy security issues important for Lithuania and the whole Baltic Sea Region. They also spoke about the likely outcome for the Lisbon Treaty to be determined by a referendum in Ireland today. The European Parliament's President expressed support to active and constructive role to be played by Lithuania in developing relations with the EU Eastern neighbours and encouraged to carry on in this direction.

Briefing the EP President on the provisions of the Lithuanian Law on the Protection of Minors against Detrimental Effects of Public Information, President Grybauskaitė underlined that proposals for improvements to this law were underway by a working group formed by the President. The two Presidents also exchanged views on the issue of ethnic minorities living in Lithuania.

President Grybauskaitė thanked the European Parliament's leader for support in organising the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact at the European Parliament and invited him to open the first meeting of the European Union and the Community of Democracies under the Lithuanian Presidency in 2009-2011 scheduled this coming November in Brussels. The EP President accepted the invitation.

This was the second meeting between Lithuanian President Grybauskaitė and European Parliament's President Jerzy Buzek. Their first meeting took place during the Lithuanian President's working visit to Brussels earlier this year, on August 26.
