Lithuania's Foreign Minister: Serbia's EU and NATO membership will strengthen security in the Balkans and Europe

On 3 August, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić, who was paying a visit to Lithuania.

Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy supported Serbia’s aspirations to become a member of the European Union and encouraged to continue aiming for a closer cooperation with NATO.

“Europe in the future is inconceivable without Serbia's membership in the EU”, Minister V. Ušackas said.

The Ministers discussed the situation in the Western Balkans and the Kosovo issue. Minister V. Ušackas encouraged Serbia to adopt a constructive position towards the strengthening of regional cooperation among the Western Balkan countries and towards improving relations with the EU on the Kosovo issue. Lithuania’s foreign minister noted that as of 2010 the Serbian citizens would not need visa to enter the EU, given that Serbia fully complies with the EU requirements.

Minister V. Ušackas asked Serbia to support the nomination of Ambassador Ina Marčiulionytė to the post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), also to support Lithuania's membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2014-2015 and the chairmanship of the 14th Annual Session of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention.

During the Ministers’ meeting with the businessmen, the possibilities of strengthening economic cooperation between Lithuania and Serbia, challenges for Lithuanian investors in Serbia were discussed.

“The experience of the first Lithuanian investors in Serbia is very important for further investments from Lithuania and other EU countries in Serbia and the region”, the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy stressed.

On 1 April 2009, direct Lithuania’s investment in Serbia amounted to 134.4 million litas.
