Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and Czech Parliamentarians discussed Energy security issues

On 3 March in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė met with the delegation of the Committee for European Affairs of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, headed by Vice-Chairman of the Committee Petr Krill.

During the meeting, measures to promote national economy were discussed and opinions were exchanged on key issues of guaranteeing energy security, as well as on the diversification of energy sources and implementation of the Nabucco gas pipeline international project.

According to the participants of the meeting, it is necessary to further develop nuclear energy. Currently, the preparatory work for the construction of new nuclear reactors is under way in Lithuania and the Czech Republic.

Vice-Minister A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and P.Krill discussed challenges for energy security and emphasized the necessity of a common EU energy policy.

The Czech representatives thanked Lithuania for the country’s support of the Czech Republic during the EU Presidency and for cooperation when implementing the priorities of the Czech EU Presidency.

Vice-Minister A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė thanked the Czech representatives for the participation of the Czech Air Force in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission at the Zokniai airport and expressed trust that the Czech mission would be repeated in the future.

During the visit to Lithuania, the delegation of the Committee for European Affairs of the Parliament of the Czech Republic also met with members of the Committee on European Affairs and the Committee on State Administration and Local Authorities of the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania, as well as with representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Education and Science.
