On 22 July, Lithuania’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas had a telephone conversation with Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphedinsson, during which the Ministers discussed Iceland’s decision to apply for the European Union membership.
Minister V.Ušackas congratulated Iceland on making this significant step and stressed that Lithuania would support Iceland’s goal of joining the EU as soon as possible.
“Just as Iceland was the first to recognise Lithuania’s independence, now Lithuania will be the first to unconditionally support Iceland’s aspiration to join the EU,” said Minister V.Ušackas.
In the nearest future, the EU intends to start discussions on perspectives of Iceland’s EU accession.
Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs invited Minister V.Ušackas to visit Reykjavik already this week and to discuss the issues of Iceland’s preparations for the EU accession and negotiations with the EU.
