We have been assured that NATO is still interested in investing in defence of the Baltic region, says President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė having met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

The President and NATO Secretary General met at NATO Air Force Base in Zokniai today.

“I am happy to see NATO Secretary General here, in Lithuania, in the only and most important NATO air force base in the Baltic states. This is one of the main NATO defence points in the Baltic region,” President Grybauskaitė said.

The President and NATO Secretary General discussed NATO's strategy reform and possibilities for Lithuania, like for other Baltic states, to play a role in formulating the new strategy.

“Lithuania and other Baltic states are prepared to take an active part in NATO's future reform, and I am very happy that Lithuania is one of the first countries in the Baltic region visited by NATO Secretary General,“ the President said.

Another issue discussed with NATO Secretary General was the future of the air policing mission in Lithuania. So far, the mission has been extended to 2014.
