New Ambassador to Germany

Today the Lithuanian Government has approved nomination of Mindaugas Butkus as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Germany and has submitted his candidacy to the President.

The incumbent Director of the Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mindaugas Butkus worked as Attaché of the European Integration Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1992-1993, Third Secretary of the Western European States Division in 1993-1994, Head of Multilateral Relations Division in 1994-1995, Advisor in Embassy of Lithuania in Germany in 1995-1999, Head of American Division of Second Bilateral Relations Department in 1999-2003, and in 2003-2007, Lithuanian Consul General in New York.

Mindaugas Butkus is proposed to be appointed as Ambassador to Germany from 15 April. He will be Lithuania’s fifth ambassador in Germany.

Germany and Lithuania established their diplomatic relations on 28 August 1991.

Germany is among Lithuania’s most important foreign trade partners. In 2008, Lithuania’s trade with Germany amounted to LTL 12.5 billion. In 2008, Lithuania’s export to Germany made up LTL 4.0 b., and import, LTL 8.5 b. Last year, Lithuania had a negative foreign trade balance with Germany totalling to LTL 4.5 b.
