Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga has strongly denied the possibility of U.S. military bases being deployed to Latvia. Vike-Freiberga made this statement after her return from Washington, where she met with her U.S. counterpart George W. Bush.
She said that Latvia has not held any official negotiations with the United States regarding the transfer of U.S. bases from Germany to Latvia.
"There are no official plans to this effect. No such moves are expected," Vike-Freiberga added.
At the same time, the president admitted that the Pentagon is considering the possibility of transferring its troops to make defense spending more efficient.
