Polish citizens will be consulted on joining the European Union in a referendum to be held at the end of 2001 or in 2002, Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek said Monday.

"It is the people of our country that should decide about our entry into the European Union. We'll hold a referendum at the latest in 2002, but maybe in as soon as a year, at the end of 2001," Buzek told.
About 59 percent of Poles support joining the EU, according to the results of a public opinion poll released in June. Poland intends to be ready to join the EU by January 2003, a date most experts consider unrealistic.
