Presidents Aleksander Kwasniewski of Poland and Valdas Adamkus of Lithuania attended on Saturday a re-enactment of the battle of Grunwald, in which Poles and Lithuanians defeated the Teutons in 1410.
"The victory of Grunwald attests to the great value of the friendship between the peoples. The military brotherhood between Poland and Lithuania succeeded at the time an important test," Kwasniewski was quoted as saying by the PAP news agency.
The battle marked "a crucial moment for the unity and the partnership between Poland and Lithuania," Adamkus said. Poland and Lithuania became closely associated between 1385 and the 18th century, when they shared a monarch and a single currency. Poland has commemorated the victory of Grunwald for several years with a re-enactment each July 15 on the site of the battle, which this year included more than one thousand costumed knights.
