President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus extended condolences on behalf of himself and the people of Lithuania to the members and friends of the Sugihara family on the death of Mrs. Yukiko Sugihara, the wife of Chiune Sugihara – a prominent historic figure, humanitarian and diplomat who had rescued many Lithuanian Jews.

"We have lost yet another important witness who saw with her own eyes the Holocaust tragedy and who had made a personal decision to defy indifference. Mrs. Yukiko Sugihara courageously assisted her husband, who saved the lives of thousands of Jews, in this act of kindness, compassion and humanity," writes the President in the letter of condolences.

The President notes in the letter that the Japanese, Lithuanian and Jewish people have lost yet another person who contributed significantly to writing an important page in the book of history.

"It is a page of dignity and pride that teaches us concord, unity and tolerance. In this hour of painful loss, I extend my wishes for strength and fortitude to Mrs. Sugihara’s family and to all those who cherish the memory of the heroic deeds of Chiune and Yukiko Sugihara," writes the President.
